The music that is played in most social dances, today is the music that was recorded from the 1930s to 1950s also known as the “ Golden Age” of tango. Anton Sukhanov created a website www.tangoplaylist.com that can be used by DJs or tangueros/as that are trying to find out about tango music during that period. Over 1500 songs are available on the website.
If you are new to Tango or just want to add to your Tango CD collection we encourage you to visit Anton Sukhanovs’ website or check itunes for various tango selections that can be downloaded to your computer.
Over the past decade their have been musicians experimenting with the introduction of electronic sounds into tango music and through the world music genre; Tango groups coming out of Buenos Aires such as NarcoTango, Otros Aires and Tanghetto have been embraced by the new wave of dancers entering the tango scene. Hector DelCurto, and Octavio Brunelli, well-known bandoneonists, Pablo Zeigler and Fernando Otero, well-known pianists have previously incorporated a fusion of Tango with Jazz. A good guide to learning more about alternative tango music can be found on http://www.tangotales.com/essays/AlternaTangos.htm
For those of you who want to take the role of a Tango DJ it is important to know that you will be the most important person in the room at the tango event. You will create the mood for the evening. The selection of the tanda, or set of music, along with the along with the sequencing of the tandas can play on the dancers emotions, leaving them feel happy, sad, bored, inspired depending on the DJs choice of orchestras and songs. Some DJs create the playlist on the spot and others prepare them in advance. It is not a simple process and involves creativity from the DJ.
Visit www.tangodj.org and www.tangoplaylist.com to get started. They are valuable websites and provide information about music, where to buy it and how to create your own playlists for a milonga.
