Senior Citizen Outreach

Dance for Health

Argen-TangoTM strongly believes in the medical benefits of dancing as a form of healing exercise. Because dancing incorporates coordination, reflexes, brain activity and overall emotional well-being, we are committed to offering this dance program to senior citizens. To date, we have entertained large groups of senior citizens with diverse backgrounds at several local daycare facilities, offering demonstrations and tango lessons to those who are physically able.

Additionally, Argen-TangoTM Manager Vittoria participates in the annual event held by the Alliance for Health, Physical Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) whose mission is to promote creative and healthy lifestyles through high-quality programs. Much research has been done on the benefits of using dance as a healing exercise: The New York Times reported (2/12/08) findings from a study in The Journal of Neurologic Physical Therapy that said Parkinsons patients who took tango classes showed improved balance, which is a common problem with people who suffer from the disease.

The New York Times also reported on a study in the Journal of Neurologic Physical Therapy (JNPT 12/07) that Argentine tango in particular improved the balance and overall well-being of people suffering from Parkinsons Disease, over other traditional movement therapies.

According to USA Today (11/15/05), a study at McGill University showed that dancing can offset the mental decline that often comes with old age and can boost brainpower. We are always looking for partnerships with facilities in the New Jersey and Philadelphia areas to support and promote this project.
